Lighter Menus
Bit of a warning: as you know Lighter Menus right now is NOT compatible with WordPress 2.7+ and later. Why, you ask? Because for starters I am not sure where and how the entirely new menus of WordPress 2.7+ should be improved! Are we sure we want them the way they were in WP 2.6? I for one am not sure. So here’s my proposal: let’s use WordPress 2.7 for a little while more so that we figure out what’s wrong with these new menus, ok? Please leave constructive comments in that direction. Everyone’s experience counts. Thanks.
p.s. If you iconize the new WP 2.7 menu, it will work like a drop-down menu, a bit like lighter menus does. The only oddity being it on the side instead than above. But then again, in a wide screen like we have nowadays, where do you have more spare room if not on the side? I’m just asking.
Lighter Menus creates drop-down menus instead of the regular admin menus of the WordPress interface, so that you can browse items with one click and work at your blog in a much more usable environment.
Fast to load, adaptable to color schemes, Lighter Menus comes with silk icons by famfamfam, a option page, and a design that fits within the WordPress interface taking the less room possible.
Lighter Menus it is not an entirely original plugin, its code is largely based on the Admin Drop Down Menus plugin by Ozh. Anyway, it comes with its own flavor and extra features.

Translations
This version of Lighter Menus features localizations in:
* Chinese, thanks to dupola
* Japanese, thanks to ne-design
* German, thanks to Kristian Bollnow
* Chinese (Taiwan), thanks to hit1205
* Russian, thanks to rlector. Also thanks to dimox for providing his translation at the same time!
* Polish, thanks to x600
* Swedish, thanks to Mikael Jorhult
* Spanish, thanks to Alejandro Urrutia Daglio
* Farsi, thanks to Mohammad Musavi
* Romanian, thanks to Dragos Nicolae
* Italian, thanks to, well, yours truly.More are needed! If you want to translate this plugin in your language you are very welcome! In fact there are very few lines to translate. Just be aware that despite what poEdit wants you to do, you should take a moment to check the code and then translate only the items that are actually under the textdomain ‘lighter-menus’. You will notice in the code that 35 or so translatable items have no textdomain indicated (they look like this:
_('Dashboard'), instead of this:_('Dashboard', 'lighter-menus')). They’re in the functions “lm_icons” and “lm_build” and they are just menu items names used for reference when binding them with the respective icons or style classes. In such cases just leave the translation empty, it would be useless work to translate said items since they are not for the user to read. Your WordPress locale takes care of those translations.
changelog:
* 2.7.3 This version is NOT compatible with the incoming WordPress 2.7. I have doubts there ever will be one, anyway this is not it. That said, with this version I added a new option to display a ‘Drafts’ entry in the ‘Manage’ submenu! Hope this is welcome. I also fixed a few minor other things in the code. I have worked on it on the very far side, so nothing exceptional. Two new translations are avilable as well, in Farsi thanks to Mohammad Musavi, and Romanian thanks to Dragos Nicolae. IMPORTANT NOTE about translations: due to a recent PC disaster I lost all email messages and addresses of Lighter Menus translators. So if you submitted a new localization in the past, or want to make a updated one after this, please consider sending it again (my address is on [this page](http://www.italyisfalling.com/contact). A thousand apologies. Thanks!
* 2.7.2 This version simply adds new localizations of Lighter Menus. Polish thanks to x600, Swedish thanks to [Mikael Jorhult](http://www.mishkin.se/) and Spanish thanks to [Alejandro Urrutia Daglio](http://theindependentproject.com/). In case you were wondering, that couple of minor problems with other plugins that have been pointed out recently on the blog have NOT been investigated or addressed by this release because there is no time. No time, my friends. Ugly words indeed but that’s how it goes.
* 2.7.1 This version fixes a couple of minor problems given by the new WP 2.6: the press-this page, that didn’t work (thanks to Robert for pointing this bug out), and the notification bubble of the plugins menu, which wasn’t considered. This version also includes a Russian translation, thanks to rlector.
* 2.7 This version includes Chinese-Taiwan translation. Thanks to hit1205 for the effort! hit1205 also heroically helped to fix the “no howdy” feature for WordPress Chinese. Thanks man! This version also implements a new feature, asked for by Callum on the blog: the ability to optionally show the comment bubble even if there is nothing to moderate. You’re welcome, man!I also cleaned a little the appearance of the above mentioned bubble, it should look less ugly now.
And with this I’m really done. An almost round number, 2.7 is really going to be the last update for a while.
* 2.6.9 A leftover “blah” of some testing I had done in the past was still in the output. It’s a miracle it didn’t show up in a worse way. A big thank you to Shobba for poiting this out and apologies for yet another bugfix update… I also fixed something with the deactivator… Anyway, I am amazed, there’s always something to fix.
* 2.6.8 This version includes a Japanese translation, thanks to ne-design, and a German translation, thanks to Kristian Bollnow. Much obliged to both of them! I also managed to have the “no howdy” option working with WordPress in Japanese (still no luck with the Chinese version, I need a guru of regex to understand this), and fixed a problem with menu icons when running with WordPress in Japanese (thanks to ne-design for pointing it out). Also, I made the regular menu link color a little brighter, and cleaned the code here and there. I think this will be the last update for a while so let’s hope everything is fine with it.
* 2.6.7 This version includes Chinese translation! A million thanks go to dupola for the effort. Also: I fixed a pretty ugly bug that broke the effect of different color of the side menu with local version; I changed the aspect of the option page to make it more similar to the regular WordPress 2.5 option pages; I fixed the removal of ‘Help’ and ‘Forums’ links, where local versions of WordPress that personalized those links would broke the function; I added the option to remove the ‘Howdy’, too, although this feature does not work in the Chinese version. While I was there I also redid the italian translation of the plugin, it was horrible. Now it is just a little less horrible. I can’t believe how much the IT lexicon sounds ugly in italian. Finally, once again thanks to dupola who made me notice a couple of oversights, including that the link to the plugin home page was mysteriously all scrambled. All should be fixed now. All things considered, I’d say this update is recommended too.
* 2.6.6 Corrected a serious bug that prevented the new 2.5.1 media uploader to work with Lighter Menus. Now everything should work out fine. Also fixed the comment awaiting moderation message that incorrectly showed up with 0 comments to moderate. Recommended.
* 2.6.5 This version revamped almost entirely the most part of the code… It already was in a way, but this plugin is basically now an adaptation of the current Ozh’s Admin Drop Down Menus plugin. Anyway, my plugin required many hours of extra work to implement new features including an option page (now with more options), more consistent colors and adaptation to color schemes (also custom ones), an uninstaller etc. This update also fixes a lot of bugs and potential bugs compared to version 2.6.1, and also imports from Ozh a number of great features like WPMU support, the ability to optionally display the original submenu, and the wrapping of the main menu within smaller windows. Useless to say how much I am grateful to the man.
* 2.6.1 This version adds an easy to use uninstaller to optionally remove every trace of Lighter Menus upon deactivation. This feature can be found in the Design > Lighter Menus page. You won’t notice, but this version also moves all the options in only one record in the database to occupy less space. Okay, there were only two records before, but still. IMPORTANT: because of the modified options, you are advised to deactivate and reactivate the plugin upon upgrading. Also in this version there are few small fixes. I always find small things to fix, I can’t say why.
* 2.6 Fixed a bug with Safari not adjusting the width of the menus correctly and other minor fixes.
* 2.5.9 This version prepared Lighter Menus for localization. Do come forward if you’re willing to translate this plugin in your language, there are very few lines to translate. Only italian and default english are available so far (please check the “Technical note for Translators” in the readme.txt). Also, I slightly changed the name of the plugin, I hated the old name, I hope you’ll understand.
* 2.5.8 Fixed a issue with other plugins adding extra long menu entries. Now menus widen and narrow at ease. Thanks to Karl for pointing out this.
* 2.5.7 Added a nifty option page where you can toggle a couple of customizations, like menu icons. For your convenience, the necessary files of the plugin now consist in just one file “lighteradminmenus.php”, and the “images” folder. All the css files are now integrated and can be removed from the plugin folder after the upgrade. Small fixes as much as you want.
* 2.5.6 Tried to distinguish chromatically the elements of the menu accordingly to WordPress 2.5, sliding them to the right in the main menu. Maybe a good idea, maybe not. Let me know.
* 2.5.5 I never realized WordPress 2.5 had two color schemes (thanks tonchi!). Lighter admin menus now adapts to this, quite beautifully I must say. Also very important fix: the menu now gives feedback when editing posts and pages (it failed to before).
* 2.5.4 fixed the awaiting comments alert and other minor glitches. Cleaned the code a good deal. Recommended.
* 2.5.3 slight redesign to favor smooth corners in the menus.
* 2.5.2 small fixes (thanks to Robert!) and a slight redesign favoring the “tab” effect. Also FF 2 and IE 7 look more alike now.
* 2.5.1 small fixes
* 2.5 redesigned to fit into wordpress 2.5.
* 2.3 trying to fix a function that breaks translations of wordpress. We’ll see.
* 2.2 actually the first version of this plugin. It should be alpha something. But because I haven’t changed a line of php code in it, it is only fair that the version number should depend on the plugin I used as the base for this

some mishap happened and all comments on this post have been deleted. Sorry about this.
I am answering now to the last unanswered comment that was here, by MinJun.
MinJun: I installed simple tagging (hey, that’s a cool plugin by the way) but I can’t reproduce the problem you are referring to. In my case the “Tags” menu works fine, and in the code the links contain regular slashes. On the other hand, the example you provide contains a backslash:
yours:
admin.php?page=simple-tagging\simpletagging.admin.php
mine:
admin.php?page=simple-tagging/simpletagging.admin.php
As far as HTML goes, it is pretty obvious for a backslash to disappear from an address, so if you have a backslash there that’s certainly a problem, and it should be solved by manually editing the plugin and replacing it with a slash.
I don’t know what caused such a problem, but I don’t have enough evidence or reason to believe that the problem was caused by my plugin.

@ico
Thanks for your quick answer, and i’m sorry to hear that the previous comments got lost (but glad that you were nevertheless able to answer mine *g*).
Did i mentioned that the error occured testing on a local server (XAMPP working on winXP with WP 2.1) – if not, sorry.
After i read your answer above i set up WP on my webspace and voila everything is working fine (as you described it), even your cool plugin.
I don’t exactly know why WP works with an backslash on my local version. Maybe because the simple tagging plugin lays in a subfolder (and windows loves backslashes in its filesystem)?
With the “Admin Menu Drop Down Plugin from Ozh” which “inspired” Andy Staines to write the “Admin Drop Menus” i once had the same problems on my local system. Without any of this three plugins my local version works fine.
At least thanks for your help (as it works on my webspace) and again thanks for your plugin

Great adaptation to the original Advanced Admin Menus plugin! The change I made was the following:
#adminmenu li:hover ul li a {
where I found width: 200px to fit everything a lot better. FYI.
Do you know if this could ever work with Custom Admin Menus… without breaking? (http://barunsingh.com/software/custom-admin-menu/)
They’re both great plugins (must-haves, if I could be so bold), but they don’t get along at ALL.

This renders quite poorly in IE6, the rows seem to have gaps in between them. Is there anyway that you could make an IE6 friendly.
Also, when you are on the “Write Page” page the dropdown for “Manage” shows “Manage” as a list item and nothing else. The same occurs when on the “Page Management” page, the “Write” menu only lists “Write” as a list item and nothing else.
See it here: http://www.esnips.com/doc/da5ad7ca-7913-4b08-b845-539667dccda1/dropdown_error2
And here: http://www.esnips.com/doc/22d72e76-fb73-4eae-be2b-dbb56dbc7d71/dropdown_error1
Otherwise, an awesome plugin!

Attention – this plugin doesn’t work together with the plugin SUBSCRIBE2 !!
If you use both, the option menu of SUBSCRIBE2 is not to see; you need to disable “lighter admin drop”, before you can make any settings of SUBSCRIBE2!
Perhaps someone can work upon this bug?

I found a bug of this plugin described as below:
when the first level menu is generated by a plugin in directory plugin rather than mu-plugin, the address should in the former of
wp-admin/admin.php?page=nextgen-gallery
rather than
http://mmblue.com/wp-admin/nextgen-gallery
But currently this plugin will generate the address in the later former.
I fixed this bug by replace the content
file_exists(ABSPATH . “wp-content/mu-plugins/{$item[2]}”)
with
file_exists(ABSPATH . “wp-content/mu-plugins/{$item[2]}”) ||
file_exists(ABSPATH . “wp-content/plugins/{$item[2]}”)
in file lighteradminmenus.php
hope it useful for you!

Hi,
just wanted to let you know that the lam.css of your plugin hides the tabs of the new upload dialog in WP 2.5. It’s an easy fix, just replace the line:
#sidemenu, #dashmenu {display:none}
with these:
#sidemenu, #dashmenu {display:none}
#media-upload-header #sidemenu {display:block}
Thanks for your plugin, very useful!

Hey, great plugin!, but I realized that it doesn’t seem to work nice if you change the color scheme of wordpress, I changed the css file to make it work, send me and e-mail and I will send you the file.
Here is a screenshot of the changes:

It does not work correct under WP 2.5!
By clicking on “plugins” … ok.
But then there is no longer a link “dashboard”.
And: the loading of all menues is much too long!
April 7, 2008 at 11:32 am |
csign, it’s weird ’cause “dashboard” should still be there. I only removed the redundant drop down menu below it, you can just click on it and it works normally. can you send me a screenshot of the menu without the link? To ico @ this domain. Thanks.
April 7, 2008 at 12:37 pm |
Please check the zip-file – it is 0 bytes large when downloading! Thanx
April 7, 2008 at 11:47 pm |
In 2.5.6 i found some Bugs. The Dashboard have no more Drop Down Menü and the color of the Link is not the same as the other Links. The Link Plugin have also not the same color.
Fix it, please!
April 8, 2008 at 12:26 pm |
@Fi, there is nothing to fix. The Dashboard does not have a drop down menu because there’s no need for one, it’s redundant. Just click on “dashboard”. And the different colors.. are a choice to give more evidence to the main voices in the menu. you might have noticed that in wordpress 2.5 “settings” “plugins” and “users” are completely apart from that menu.

#Karl. I hear you but the problem with using ‘min-width’ instead of ‘width’ in the CSS (which would solve the problem) is that it screws up bad many other things, some of which are fixable by sacrificing to design, and others are not fixable because they are in IE. So I don’t know.
April 10, 2008 at 1:42 am |
@karl, wait! I just figured this out… which makes it version 2.5.8 I guess. Of course IE7 does not follow but at this point I don’t care.

I also think it made no sense to split off the settings/users/plugins as if that menu selection were unrelated to the others. This plugin lets you combine it with the others, though it has a weird .! at the end of the menu bar, right before the logout/help/forums links (which really might just as well be included, too, don’t you think?) in my browser. May 1, 2008 at 3:48 pm |
Great plugin, I love it. Ozh has a great feature in his plugin where he adds the little comment number in the speech bubble to his modified menu. Your plugin adds the icons, which I think are nicer, if you also had a similar comment number, you’d have me 100% converted!
If I’m not being clear, it looks like a mini version of the new feature in WP 2.5 which shows how many comments are awaiting moderation. I can send a screenshot if you like, just let me know.
May 1, 2008 at 3:58 pm |
@Callum: hey, my plugin does that too. You can see it in the screenshots on this page. Isn’t this feature working for you? If you already haven’t, try to unapprove a comment to test it out.
May 1, 2008 at 5:14 pm |
@ico: Aha, I see it, is it new since I updated from 2.6.6 to 2.6.8? The graphic on Ozh’s plugin looks a little better on my screen I think. It also shows even if the comment count is 0, like WordPress, which is a nice feature I think. It’s reassuring to know I’m on top of my comments!
May 1, 2008 at 7:37 pm |
@Callum: it had that feature since version 2.5. Anyway, as far as I know, WordPress does hide the count of the awaiting comments when they’re zero. They created a style called count-0 just to apply the display:none rule to it, which I simply imitate…
May 2, 2008 at 4:53 am |
@ico: Fair enough. Maybe I’ll hack your plugin to use the graphics from Ozh’s plugin!

May 3, 2008 at 9:55 am |
@ico: Don’t like is perhaps too strong a term, probably “prefer the other one” would be more accurate!
Upon reflection, I think I’ll live with your plugin the way it is simply for sake of simplicity!

The latest version doesn’t work in my admin panel… There are the main links but no drop down menues. The source code told me:
Dashboardblah class=’lmsidemenu’blahblahblahblahblah class=’lmsidemenu’blah class=’topcurrent’blah class=’lmsidemenu’blah Dashboard
It seems there’s something wrong ^^
May 3, 2008 at 6:59 pm |
Okay, I’ve tested some older versions, the problem exists since 2.6.5! 2.6.1 is working well.
May 4, 2008 at 1:35 am |
@Shobba, you are damn right. It’s a leftover of some testing I did long ago. Question 1: how did I forget this “blah” around? Question 2: how it didn’t cause bigger visible problems? Question 3: How much do I owe you for discovering this??
Thanks, man. I mean, I thought I had closed the bugfixing here. Never say ever. 2.6.9 is out.
May 4, 2008 at 1:46 am |
@Shobba: …wait a minute! you said 2.6.1 works well for you… and the latest doesn’t…?? This means your problem IS NOT with the “blahblah”. You are having another problem… maybe some conflict with some plugin… maybe some ugly bug I have yet to discover… and maybe I could have waited to release this useless bugfix… Holy cow, I feel like an ass!!
May 4, 2008 at 2:30 am |
Hehe, I also often use “blah” for bugfixing and testing
Hey, you mentioned my name in your Log, that’s cool
Well, I said 2.6.1 is the last one which works well for me, 2.6.5 is the first one I can’t use.
I tried 2.6.9, but there’s no different result… now the source code looks like (hm, how can I post html code… Well, let’s post a picture ^^)
http://web8.charlie316.server4you.de/code.gif
so, there is..
ul id = “dashmenu”
li class=’lm_toplevel’ main-link
ul
li class=’lm_sublevel’ sub-link /li
li class=’lm_sublevel’ sub-link /li
/ul
/li
/ul
is that code right?
May 4, 2008 at 12:15 pm |
@Shobba: mmmh, the code is right as far as I can tell. One ul for the whole menu, and uls for each drop down menus. You’re not having a problem with the code, and if you had, it would not be with the HTML but with the CSS. But as I said, my bet is that the conflict is with another plugin. Have you tried disabling some of them and see what happens? If you are running WordPress in German, also try to temporarily switch to no language, you never know. Blah.

May 23, 2008 at 9:31 pm |
@Daishi: I tried but in my experience Gengo works fine with Lighter menus. There is no reason why the two should not work together. I think it is another plugin to cause you problems. Have you tried deactivating some?
@ bfnh: it’s a fair request, I’ll look into it when I’ll have the time.
May 24, 2008 at 8:47 am |
The plugin adds a default icon to pages created through plugins, but not to new pages created by directly editing the $menu and $submenu variables. I use this to create a new menu “Drafts” under Manage. I think adding an additional “default :” case to the swich() statement should do the trick. I’m happy to whip up a patch and submit it if you like. It would also have the advantage of future-proofing the plugin in that any new menus would automatically get the default icon.
May 26, 2008 at 3:20 am |
One of your trackbacks has caused the feed for this post to fail validation. I think that’s why my feed reader is rejecting it.
May 26, 2008 at 2:36 pm |
Hey callum, unfortunately from where I am now it can be difficult to fix bugs… but of course the things you write make sense! I’ll try the effects of the “default” case as soon as I have time for it… can you just tell me, to speed the process(so I don’t have to figure it out by myself
), how do you edit directly those variables? Have you created a small plugin for yourself or modified the wordpress files? And how?
About the feed validation, I don’t know what the problem could be, I’ll try to look into it but again, I might not be able to fix it from here… sorry about it!
May 26, 2008 at 2:51 pm |
Callum: I tired that feed address with googlereader and it works without a problem. No rejection! …Could it be something on your end?
May 26, 2008 at 6:23 pm |
(I posted this at the forums, I thought I’d post it here as well to see if you could help)
I was attempting to follow this forum advice piece to set up “current mood”, “currently reading”, “current music”, etc fields to go at the end of posts. I followed the directions on the Using Custom Fields codex, went to the Write page, added a new value in the current field and the dropdown menus suddenly stopped working. The links turned blue, there is no drop down menu on rollover, and only links available are the primary menu (Dashboard, Write, Mangage, etc).
I have no idea where to even start looking for the problem. I’ve browsed through the code for hours last night and this morning and can’t find the problem. I deactivated the plugin, reactivated–same problem. I deleted the plugin and reinstalled–same problem. I read through the lightermenu.php and it looks normal, I can’t see any changes from the original file.
In frustration, I did install Ozh’s Admin Drop Down menus; it works fine. I’d like to be able to fix the problem and know how to prevent it in the first place.
I did notice, when I had both Ozh and lightermenu installed, that I now don’t have an “settings” page to edit as well.
Thanks in advance for the help.
May 26, 2008 at 11:45 pm |
Julia, it seems like something went wrong with the javascript part of lighter menus… I can’t say why… Using either firefox or Internet explorer you should be able to see what error, at what line the script went wrong. What’s funny is that it should have nothing to do with custom fileds, because custom fields have little to do with the admin interface.. Anyway: try and look at the borwsers’ messages, maybe in IE status bar, or the firefox console, or with the firefox extension “firebug”: and see if you can spot what line is causing the error. This should help us understand…
May 26, 2008 at 11:49 pm |
Julia, question: did the problem you mentioned happened when OZh’s plugin and mine were installed at the same time? Cause they shouldn’t be, you know. They would certainly conflict.
May 27, 2008 at 4:17 am |
@ico: My plugin uses the “_admin_menu” action and edits the $menu and $submenu vars directly. Here’s the change to the code to make the plugin.png image the default one (I can send you the file by email if that’s easier, just drop me a line with your address):

Hey,
Thanks for this, so much neater and quicker.
Minor bug, using IE6 (at work so no choice) I have to choose an item from the dropdown really quickly otherwise the browser closes the dropdown.
Also, minor pedantry here: to perfect your English, the plugin activation blurb should read:
“Creates Drop Down Menus for WordPress Admin Panels. Fast to load, adaptable to color schemes, comes with silk icons, an option page, and a design that fits within the WordPress 2.5 interface taking the least room possible. By ico.”
Keep up the great work.

Since you are very good a UI design could you look at taking a stab at a redo of the posting window. I hate the current design. Was much more compact and useful in old version.
Here is want I would like:
>Dragable elements for tags, excertps etc for vetical position
>more categories back to right column. I don’t want a scroll field, I need to see all categories in a compact list so I can check off items.
> condense everything vertically. Seems present design for 24 in screen. I work on a laptop with 15.5 in diagonal.
>Those ajaxy pops up have to go. They take up the whole screen for no good reason. Very difficult to work on laptop.
What do you say? Laptop users of the world are waiting for a solution.

I jsut upgraded my wpmu isntall from 1.3 to 1.5.1 and activated your plugin for testing. all works fine, except if I go to the themes page !? then the menu disappears, and the page looks scrambled.
anyone else experiencing this?

Love this plugin but it is flacky. I am using WP 2.5.1 and some themes/plugins cause drop down menus to not work. On theme ‘brightness’ http://www.dailywp.com/brightness-wordpress-theme/
custom setting are not reachable when this is active. WHen I disable everything OK. I don’t know what wp hooks you are using but it appears that conflicts with a decent number of plugins/themes arise.
THis really should be part of next release of WP core code so it can be properly vetted.

Thanks for such a useful plugin. I do have a problem when attempting to activate, though.
I keep getting an “Invalid Plugin” message. I’ve deleted the files twice from my server, and reinstalled 3 times… always the same “Invalid Plugin” message.
How do I get around this? My WP version is 2.5.1 and your version is 2.7
Thanks for any help you can give.

When you get time to work on a next version of the plugin, would you consider adding an option to hide the “Please Upgrade Now” notices that plaster themselves all over the admin panel when a new WP version is released?

Hi. I tried this on the recommendation of a friend. I today updated to WP 2.6, and I noticed that this does not work easily. When I activate, the menutop bar changes, but becomes static. There is no drop downs. What am I missing? When I disable this and delte completely its folder, and then enable Ozh Dropdown Menu, that one works, but yours doesn’t. Please help? I like the look of your menu better. Thanks! (Pls also email me when your reply thank you)

There is a little bug with the new Press This feature of WordPress 2.6. I can’t switch to another tab like “Photo” while your plugin is enabled because the following error occurs: “Error: jQuery(“#lm”).css(“width”) is undefined”. I think it would be just fine to disable the plugin completly for press-this.php as there are no menus anyway.

Hey there…thanks for the fast update to v2.7.1 for WP2.6 compatibility. I did notice one other missing item, though — the “Turbo” link (for Admin speedup using Google Gears) isn’t available. I really like the look-and-feel of your version…any chance of getting access to “Turbo” with another minor tweak?
Thanks again…Neil
July 20, 2008 at 6:48 pm |
@Neil: you’re right, the Turbo link is missing.. Anyway, it will show up when you decide to display the Help and Forums links from the Lighter Menus option page. Since, if I understand it correctly, the Turbo link is used once to install a feature and then it is very little used, maybe it won’t be a big problem to leave the things like they are for the time being? I have really little time to work on it right now…

Great plugin! I looked at several plugins and yours is the best.
I’ve run into a couple problems with it, though.
1. If there are too many top-level menu options, they overlap in the middle. This only seems to happen in IE7, although it works best on Safari and Opera.
2. If the maximum number of items in a menu is exceeded, it’s supposed to display the options in horizontal lists. This doesn’t work properly in any of the 4 main browsers.
– In IE7 and Safari, the lists exceed the right border of the window preventing you from being able to click on some of the options.
– Opera gets this partially right and displays the menu within the browser window if it is far enough to the left. Otherwise it behaves like IE7 and Safari.
– FF2 seems to ignore this option.
I’ve posted this info on my plugin evaluation page at http://dpotter.net/technical/index.php/wordpress-upgrades and decided you might want to hear about it directly
.
Have you seen these? None of them are show-stoppers by any means, just small annoyances.
Thanks,
David

Hello!
This plugin is a very good one. There’s no doubt about it. However, I was disappointed to find out that it’s not yet compatible with Fluency Admin (please refer to the URL I inputted for it) which I have grown into using. Would it be possible to make the two plugins work well together? As what I see and hope, it won’t probably require much tweaking as the only problem when the two are activated is the menus go back on top when the admin theme plugin is set to place it on the right.
Cheers!

Two things –
1) What is the difference between this and Ozh’s plugin? You say this is based on that, but don’t say what you changed or added.
2) Does your plugin support the Ozh-style menu icons? If it doesn’t, it probably should. I would recommend using the same hook as he does, so plugin developers can add one icon and it will work with both plugins.

Hi there,
I did an upgrade of Akismet and Lighter Menu doesn’t work anymore.
WordPress v2.6.2
Akismet v2.1.8 – Doen’t break Lighter Menus
Akismet v2.2 – Breaks Lighter Menus
Thanks…

October 17, 2008 at 9:10 am |
me too, as Josip and Mik. I’m using WP 2.6.2 and the lastest version of both plugins: Akismet and Lighter Menus. I think that the issue could be related to the new Akismet sub-menu about Akismet Stats. Any idea?

yep – the new Akismet 2.2 breaks the lighter menus plugin

Hi,
I’m currently testing out the WPlite plugin (http://mahalkita.nanogeex.com/wplite/) which enables admins to disable certain items from the WordPress administrative area.
When I use Lighter Menus, the WPlite plugin’s disabled items are not reflected by Lighter Menus.
This is kind of related to Dave’s comment.
Are you planning on integrating Lighter Menus to “talk” to either WPlite or the Role Manager plugin?

I prefer 2.6 (with lighter menus!) way for sure – it is still less clicks and I find drop downs far less intrusive, but appreciate you wanting to give 2.7 way a try.
For now I’ll go back to using http://planetozh.com/blog/my-projects/wordpress-admin-menu-drop-down-css/ (what I was using before I found lighter menus, which I preferred because it was, well, lighter
) which has been updated to work with 2.7.
December 22, 2008 at 11:06 pm |
Thanks for this awesome plugin! I used it pior to 2.7. Personally, I think it beats the new 2.7 menu because yuor plugin made the menu more compact and a lot faster to use. Hovering the mouse over the top menu showed the drop down menus immediately. PLUS, NO SCROLLING…! Now, with 2.7 we need to scroll all the time, which is unnerving I find. I loved your plugin! I think your plugin was one of the best navigation WordPress could ever have, and I wonder why they didn’t go in this direction instead…
December 23, 2008 at 5:55 pm |
I also wish Lighter Menus worked with 2.7. The drop down functionality of 2.7 either needs more clicks. All menus could be expanded but then this will get confusing.
There’s yet a plugin to improve the default menus (Fluency Admin) but this also uses the side.

I had used Ozh’s menu plugin and then Andy Staines’ admin-menus but found Lighter Menus about six months ago and really liked the way they worked compared to the others.
The new 2.7 menus do require a click rather than hovering over them for the list and I run on a slow Win2000 box most of the time (upgrading in January) and it takes more than a second to expand.
I’ll use Ozh’s for now but encourage you to also consider updating Lighter Menus for a alternative. Thanks!

I just wanted to say thanks for the great run up until the WP 2.7 release. Lighter Menus was great while the need existed. Now that 2.7 is out I am really loving the new menu system.
I did make one change. Several people were asking to move the menu to the right side of the screen. I made a plug-in to switch it, and I have been looking around for any other ideas for fixes. So far it seems like most people are really happy with 2.7 as-is.
